DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY

While “digital” may be a dirty word for photo collectors, it is important for collectors of contemporary Type 1 photos to understand the evolution of digital photography.

Digital photography didn’t advance all at once—it crossed several quality thresholds where it became comparable to, then surpassed, film for most uses. Below we lay out a milestone-based breakdown that collectors can consider when collecting photographs. It is based on this after considering all other criteria we will only authenticate photos as Type 1 that were produced prior to 2007.

In discussing the evolution laid out below we had extensive discussions with professional photographers and found that while access to digital became readily available in the late 1990’s most professional photographers continued to shoot in film through the mid 2000’s.

1999 - 2002

Early Digital | Clearly Inferior to Film

  • Typical resolution: 1–4 megapixels

  • Visible pixel grids, color dot patterns, banding

  • Poor dynamic range and highlight detail

  • Common artifacts when magnified:

  • Square pixels

  • Color aliasing

  • Harsh edge sharpening

  • Not comparable to darkroom prints under magnification

Collector Consideration:

Easily distinguishable from darkroom prints at 5×–10× loupe.

2003 - 2006

Transitional | Near-Professional

  • Resolution jumps to 6–10 megapixels

  • Better sensors

  • Noise reduction improves, but:

  • Skin tones still break into blocks

  • Micro-detail inferior to fine-grain film

Collector Consideration:

Still distinguishable from First Gen darkroom prints when magnified.

2007 - 2010

Film-Comparable Threshold | First Major Inflection Point

  • Full-frame sensors

  • Resolution jumps to 12–21 megapixels

  • Natural tonal transitions

  • Minimal pixel structure at normal loupe inspection

  • Dynamic range approaches color negative film

This is when digital became “good enough” for most professional editorial uses.

Collector Consideration:

At casual inspection, digital and darkroom prints can be confused—but magnification still reveals differences.
