TYPE 1 DEFINED

The classification system that defined “Type 1” photos was introduced in 2005 when it was in a book titled: “A Portrait of Baseball Photography” published three years before PSA/DNA launched their photo authentication division. This definition has remained unchanged for 20+ years:

TYPE 1

A first-generation photograph, developed from the original negative during the period (approximately two years) when the picture was taken. Type 1’s, because of their vintage and originality, are the most desirable and valuable of the four photograph types.

We believe that with the emergence of digital photography the definition needed to be modified to define how photographs were to be produced. It is on that basis we developed the following definition:

A Type 1 photograph is a first-generation, chemically developed photographic print produced directly from the original camera negative or transparency on photographic paper within a reasonable proximity to when the image was captured.
